Seasonal Spark: Montessori Learning Through the Holidays

Seasonal Spark: Montessori Learning Through the Holidays

Dear Montessori n’ Such Community,

The holidays are sneaking up, and that means cozy classroom moments, hands-on traditions, and plenty of chances for children to learn through doing. In Montessori settings, the season offers beautiful, intentional ways to practice Practical Life, Sensorial, and Cultural lessons: setting a table for a shared snack, wrapping a small gift, sorting ribbons by color and texture, or listening to the soft sounds of holiday music while moving gently.

Bring the season into your prepared environment with simple, child-sized invitations: a low tray with holiday-themed materials for pouring and spooning, a peaceful art shelf for making nature-based decorations, or a small woodworking area for carefully hammering and sanding simple ornaments. These activities are not only joyful, they isolate skills such as fine motor control, sequencing, and concentration, while also encouraging cooperation and care for the community.

Sensorial moments are everywhere this time of year. Invite children to notice scents (cinnamon, citrus, evergreen), textures (smooth ornaments, rough pinecones), and sounds (soft bells, quiet footsteps). Use these observations to build vocabulary and to practice describing qualities like warm, cool, soft, and sharp. And don’t forget the cultural side: share stories and music from different traditions to help children appreciate the many ways people celebrate.
