Maitri Learning began by accident in 2003 when Julia Volkman, an AMI-trained Montessori educator, took a break from teaching to adopt her son. While waiting, she began creating Montessori materials for her future classroom, and got carried away. A friend encouraged her to share them, and when a Montessori catalog company loved her samples, Maitri Learning was born.
From the start, Julia’s mission was clear: to create materials that are truly useful, of the highest AMI-quality, environmentally responsible, and financially sustainable. The name Maitri—a Buddhist word meaning loving-kindness toward oneself and others—captures the compassionate spirit behind her work.
What began in a spare room has grown into a dedicated team serving classrooms worldwide. Rooted in Montessori philosophy and informed by Julia’s graduate studies at Harvard in Mind, Brain, and Education, Maitri Learning bridges research and practice, helping educators nurture confident, joyful, and capable learners.
