The Negative Stair set includes 5 sets of bead bars, representing the numbers 1 through 9, neatly stored in a sturdy dark grey box. Bead bars 1 through 5 are all light grey, while the bars from 6 to 9 begin with five light grey beads followed by dark grey beads to complete the total. For example, the bead bar for 6 has 5 light grey beads and 1 dark grey bead.

This intentional color grouping helps children easily recognize quantities by fives and then see the additional beads, supporting a key early math skill known as subitizing—the ability to instantly identify the number of objects in a small group without counting one by one. Subitizing strengthens number sense and supports children's ability to understand and work with numbers more fluently.
