Getting Ready for the Holidays; Cooking with Young Children

Dec 14, '22

Memories of the winter holiday begin with time with family, friends, and eating yummy foods! No matter how old your children are, getting kids involved in cooking is always fun!

Cooking with students is a wonderful way to promote important fine motor and practical life skills. Yet cooking with children can be a total mess. This week’s newsletter will help you organize your space and prepare you for any surprises your little chef sends your way.

Young Chefs in the kitchen
Cooking with children can teach them a variety or subjects while being a fun activity. What toddler or preschooler doesn't love snack time?

The key to successful kid cooking is having the right cutting and food preparation tools for your children. Knives that are easily held by small hands and scoops and spoons that aren't too heavy is key. Plus, choosing the right tools will help your children feel safe while prepping their food.
Even if you do not have time to cook with your students, adding cooking tools to your practical life shelf is a wonderful way to help them practice without wasting food. Whisks can be paired with soap and water for a fun bubble making activity. This can later be translated into an egg whipping activity when you have time to cook with the child.

Baking Holiday Cookies
This time of year is a wonderful time to begin the tradition of baking with children. When making cookies, children can be involved in every step of the way from sifting flour to cracking an egg. Help children learn how to follow directions by using colorful bowls. You can practice giving directions like, “Will you add the red bowl of flour to the mixing bowl?” Using colorful bowls is an easy way to keep things organized and easy to use when guiding children through the process.

Rolling out cookie dough and cutting out shapes were some of our favorite memories as children. Decorating each cookie was always a treat, as was seeing the way the cookies puffed up while baking. And well, eating the cookies of course!

Spend time together and begin to create these lovely memories with your little ones this year. Even if the cookies are misshapen, the memories will last a lot longer than the cookies do!
